Organic materials for metal ion and anion sensing

  Abstract  
  Water contamination with metal ions and anions are dangerous for health. The major challenge is selective detection of these ions in their various oxidation states. Colorimetric fluorescence and electrochemical methods are widely used for the detection. Organic molecules that are used for detection of metal ion and anion are presented in this review. The ions coordinate to the sensing molecules by various mechanisms - electrostatic, hydrogen bonding. The binding event of the ions is detected by the change in electrical and optical properties of the molecules.
